Karla Pearce has been teaching painting and drawing to adults and children alike since 1996. She studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design and the University of Calgary. Her main passion is painting but she also balances it with writing. Karla works a great deal with children and local schools. As a professional artist Karla Pearce uses her unique perspective to share her knowledge of art with individuals, students and the community as a whole.

Personal Development Freestyle (Watercolour and Acrylic)

In this class the subject of study will vary according to the students' interests, with the objective being the continuation of developing one's own individual style and conceptualizing and producing paintings. Students will look at how to successfully compose, build and finish a painting. The class will focus on problem-solving techniques for painting issues that arise. Time will be spent on positive and supportive group critique.

Plein Air Painting Summer Workshop (For all ages )

This outdoor painting course will introduce you to the process of direct painting in nature. While painting basics will be discussed, instruction will deal more with interpreting what you see and feel in being a part of the environment. Painting on-location and from life hones your powers of observation and helps to create a very personal style of interpreting nature. Classes will consist of a short group discussion each morning, followed by a day of painting, with individual attention from the instructor. You are welcome to work in the medium of your choice. Please be prepared to work outdoors. Family rates available.

Portrait Painting

The focus of this class will be the study of the human head. We will be painting from life, and from photographs in this class. You will learn how artists analyze the colour of their subjects, and the importance of using complements to keep their paintings in harmony using a limited palette. Students will learn about features of the head, dealing with textures of hair, and even painting reading glasses and jewellery. As always, good drawing values will be stressed with either acrylic or watercolour paint.



Drawing with a Paint Brush

How do professional artists paint so quickly? One of the short cuts is they will skip the pencil drawing. In this class students will learn how to do preliminary sketch work using a paintbrush. Visualization techniques will be taught that will aid students in finding form, shape, light and negative space. This is class is for the student that has some experience.


Still life Floral Painting

Learn how to paint beautiful natural flowers in all their spring glory! Students will get to explore the beauty of freshly cut spring flowers all with paint. The class will learn how to manipulate brushstrokes creating various effects in blending and layering describing natural floral elements.  Supply list available upon registration

This is an introductory painting class for the student interested in exploring acrylic or watercolour paints. No previous painting experience is necessary. The first half of the class focuses on discovering colour theory and application techniques. Students learn how to see colour and gain a new understanding of optical effects and spatial differences simply with the use of colour. The second half of the class focuses on applying that knowledge and the students create a finished painting.

Abstract Expressionist Painting

This is an inspiring, process-oriented course for those who are willing to delve into the creative journey towards abstract painting. Students will be encouraged to explore language, foster emotional richness, spontaneity and experimentation and to develop conceptual ideas. Helpful visual information on modern art will be provided with an emphasis on composition, balance, colour, form and symbolism, the representation of motion and the superimposition of images in the organization of space. Both one-on-one and group critiques are aimed at enhancing individual growth. Media will mainly include acrylics and watercolours. Collage and various media or materials of the student's choice can be introduced to experiment with different techniques.

Painting from Photographs

This class is for the student that has had some previous painting experience. In this class we take inspiration from personal images and photographs translating them into paintings. Any image can be used, ranging from landscape, floral, architectural or portraiture. The students will learn how to mix and create a full range of colours that will give them the tools to not only reproduce an image but to infuse it with their own creativity.


Painting for Pleasure
acrylic or watercolour

One of the most important and exciting things about learning to paint and draw is 'learning to see' in a new way. This class will enrich your ideas about painting and open up a whole new dimension that is deeply creative and rewarding! Students will be encouraged to develop their own style while exploring a more intuitive approach to painting. This class will investigate ways to interpret and communicate ideas through lively discussions, demonstrations, and plenty of painting. This is class is for any level student ranging from beginner to advanced.


Watercolour Magic

This is a “first steps” watercolour class. No previous painting experience is necessary. Learn the secret of watercolour’s brilliance and appeal. Basic building blocks of painting will be covered; from palette to paper, dripping in, wet in wet, softening edges, dry brush and splashing.

How To Make Your Paintings Glow II
 (Watercolour and Acrylic)


Learn how to see the bright and dark areas of painting in a brand new way. Kamloops artist Karla Pearce, will teach understanding of visual drama through the use of contrast and colour theory and how to employ it in painting. Some previous painting experience is an asset to this class, but is not necessary. The first half of the class focuses on perceiving light, shadows and learning to see colour in terms of value. In the second half of the class, students will create a finished painting.
